Dr. David Chan, D.Min. BCC
Bethany Homes Houston was established by the Rev. Dr. David Chan,
D. Min., in 2009. Serving as a hospital chaplain at the Texas Medical Center,
Dr. Chan understands the financial burden on patients and families who have to
stay near the hospital for weeks or even months while receiving medical
treatment. Patients and families often begged him to help find affordable
housing to alleviate the anxiety and the frustration. One day, he was so
moved by the desperate plea of a terminally ill patient that he decided to do
something about it. He
renovated and refurnished his own home and turned it into a "Home Away
From Home" for the family. Since then, he has added several units to
his portfolio to meet the needs not only of the patients of the Texas Medical
Center, but also students and interns at the schools and research institutions
such as Baylor, Rice, UH, TA&M and UT Health. Observers and exchange
scholars at MD Anderson, Texas Childrens, Texas Heart Institute and the
Methodist Hospital also find his Homes as havens of rest after a hard
working day.
Dr. Chan received his Master of Divinity from Southeastern Baptist
Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina, and the Doctor of Ministry
from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. He was a
missionary to South East Asia for 13 years and served as the dean of a Biblee college. He also pastored several churches and was adjunct professor of church
growth and pastoral leadership at several seminaries around the
world. After his wife died of cancer at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in
2001, he decided to become a chaplain and minister to the spiritual needs of patients and their families. Over the course of 17 years, he ministered to over 100,000 patients in ICU, ER and pre- and post-surgery wards. He recently retired at age 75. He is now married to his new wife, Deborah, who
was a professional singer and lead actress in Chinese movies, and gave it all up when the Lord called her into the gospel ministry. He is the father of a son and a daughter, ant the proud grandfather of a 6 year old granddaughter.
He names his condos "Bethany Homes" to convey his
mission of providing hospitality, affordability, and peace of mind to people
who need it most.
